What We Do

CoE, or Center of Excellence, as Gartner Group describes it, brings together people from different disciplines to “concentrate existing expertise and resources … to attain and sustain world-class performance and value”.

At Goldman Sachs, the primary goal of Automation CoE is to automate complex business processes across our trading, banking, consumer, asset management and other businesses by stitching together multiple solutions built with different tools. How is it different from typical software development?

Instead of tuning JVM GC performance or hunting down concurrency bugs, we focus on high level software components that directly drive business processes and enable ‘process-as-code’. Our success is not measured by lines of code, but through superior client experience, higher straight through processing (“STP”) rates, reduced risk, greater efficiency, and higher employee morale in moving their work from manual activities to be insights driven decision making.

Instead of spending most of time designing class hierarchies or coding in our corner, we also spend a lot of time collaborating. Close collaboration with core engineering and divisions is central to every project we work on.

We don’t indulge in our favorite programming languages. Instead we work with many vendor tools and platforms to get things done. Salesforce, Automation Anywhere, Alteryx, Instabase, and Appian are some examples. A few common patterns of automation and digitization are data extraction, multi-divisional workflows and analytics.

Who We Are

Founded in 2020, Singapore Automation CoE is a team of 6 from diverse backgrounds and experiences. We are trained in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Linguistics. We have programmed in Java, Scala, Python, Golang, JavaScript and C++. We have also worked with React, Django, Spring, TensorFlow, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes and AWS. Each member brings distinctive perspectives and strengths to the team.

We value teamwork over individual brilliance. We care deeply about our coworkers. We work very hard to create a sense of community. Not only we share our knowledge with members of the team, but also with engineers from other teams.

We value learning over existing skills. We are continuously upskilling ourselves to meet the challenges of process automations, which often involve a wide spectrum of technologies, in-house services and vendor tools.

Who We Look For

Most of our work is project-driven instead of product-driven. Every project involves integration of multiple tools and collaboration with other teams. We are looking for candidates who:

• Are passionate about automation and transformation of how work is done. You are dedicated to delivering effective automation solutions and overcoming obstacles both technical and non-technical.
• Have strong communication skills. You’ll work closely with Operations to understand, analyze automation requirements and propose, articulate potential solutions.
• Are a polymath in engineering. You use an arsenal of tools and techniques in problem solving and love learning new technologies

Our candidates should also meet the following minimum requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Equivalent
• Strong coding skills in Java and Python
• Experiences with common development tools, such as git, ssh and shell scripting
